I’m New Here

Welcome to St. John’s!  We hope that our website gives you a good idea of what you will experience when you visit and a look at all we have to offer.  If you have any questions, contact us right away.

Location and Directions

We’re located at the corner of Third Avenue and Seventh Street in Sterling, a couple of blocks north of the Post Office. Our address is 703 Third Avenue, Sterling, IL 61081.

What to Expect

Worship at St. John’s lasts from 60 to 75 minutes and features times for prayer, singing, Scripture readings, and a 10-12 minute sermon from Pastor Mark Oehlert or intern pastor.  Most of our members dress casually, so please come as you are.  We celebrate Holy Communion every week, and all who believe in Jesus are welcome to join us in this sacrament.

Parking is available in two lots: the church lot, accessible via Eighth Street, and the overflow lot, accessible via Third Avenue.  You may also park along the street on Third Avenue.

Early Service (8:15am) – This is a traditional worship service, with hymns from our hymnal, Evangelical Lutheran Worship, accompanied primarily on our world-class pipe organ.

Sunday School (9:30am) – Our Sunday School offers safe, exciting, fun Christian education from ages 6 weeks through adults.  We offer staffed nursery care for young children in our nursery, adjacent to the fellowship hall.  School-age children should be brought to Luther Chapel at the end of the Education Wing for our weekly opening gathering.  We often have adult Bible studies and coffee hours during this time as well.

Late Service (10:45am) – We call this a “blended” worship service, incorporating both traditional and more modern music and worship styles.

Questions? Please send us an email or give us a call.

We’re looking forward to seeing you in worship on Sunday morning!
